Three Oven Problems That Mean Stop Cooking and Pick Up the Phone

Most oven faults are inconveniences. A few are hazards, and after fifteen years, we’re direct about which is which.
  • A gas smell, or an igniter that clicks without lighting. A weak igniter lets unburned gas collect before it finally catches, which is why some gas ovens light with a small whump. Turn the oven off, ventilate the kitchen, and don't keep retrying it. If the smell is strong, leave the house and call your gas utility first, us second. A worn igniter itself is one of the most routine gas-range repairs we do; ignoring one is where the risk lives.
  • A bake element that sparked, glowed white-hot in one spot, or visibly split. That's an electrical short in an exposed element, and running it again can arc against the oven cavity. Flip the breaker off. The repair is quick and inexpensive; the drama is optional.
  • Door glass that cracked, or a door that no longer closes flush. Oven doors are layered glass with a specific job: keeping 230-degree heat off the cabinet faces and small hands. A compromised door isn't cosmetic, especially in kitchens with kids. We replace glass and hinges as part of a standard visit.

The Self-Clean Cycle Retires More Ovens Than Old Age Does

Here’s something we tell customers that no manual will: a surprising share of our oven repair in Edmonton calls come two days after somebody ran the self-clean cycle. Self-clean pushes the oven to roughly 470°C, far past anything cooking asks of it. That extreme heat targets the oven’s own weak points, like the thermal fuse, the door-lock motor, and the control board sitting above the cavity. The classic call: “I cleaned it before hosting, and now it’s dead with the door locked.”
The fix is usually a thermal fuse or lock assembly, not a catastrophe. But the better move is prevention. If you love the feature, run it in a cooler month with the kitchen ventilated, never the week before you need the oven most. No, and you’re in good company. The extreme heat of self-clean commonly takes out a thermal fuse or the door-lock mechanism, especially on ovens past their fifth year. Both are standard parts we stock. Don’t force the door; a pried lock turns a small repair into a bigger one. It’s typically a single-visit fix.
Probably neither, it’s a part. Uneven browning usually traces to a failing temperature sensor, a convection fan that’s stopped spinning, or a door gasket leaking heat on one edge. Genuine calibration drift happens too, and many ovens let us adjust it on the spot. Before assuming the worst, note where it browns fastest; that detail alone often tells us which part to bring.
No. A healthy igniter lights the burner within about 90 seconds. The delay-then-whoosh pattern means the igniter has weakened and gas is pooling before ignition. It still “works,” which is why people live with it for months, but it’s the one symptom we’d rather you not wait on. Igniter replacement is quick and among the more affordable gas-range repairs.
The parts cost the same; the difference is access. A wall oven sometimes has to be removed from its cabinet to access the board or fuse, which adds labor time, and we account for that in the written quote, not as a surprise afterward. Our techs handle built-ins weekly, including double wall ovens, so cabinetry doesn’t scare us.
Look it up, but hold off on ordering. F-codes point to a circuit, not always a specific part. An F3, for instance, involves the sensor circuit, which could mean the sensor, its wiring, or the board reading it.
