My freezer works but the fridge section is warm. Is that serious?
It’s the most common call we get, and it’s usually good news. Cold air is being made; it’s just not reaching the fresh-food section. The culprit is typically the evaporator fan, the air damper, or frost blocking the vents from a failed defrost part. All are standard single-visit repairs, far cheaper than the compressor problem people fear.
Keep the doors shut. An unopened fridge holds safe temperatures for about 4 hours; a full freezer holds for roughly 48 hours (24 if half-full). If we can get to you same-day, and we usually can before 5 PM, most food is saveable. Move milk, meat, and leftovers to a cooler with ice if the repair has to wait overnight.
Sometimes. On a high-end unit (Sub-Zero, Miele, newer Bosch) under 8 years old, yes, the math works. On a 12-year-old entry-level fridge, almost never, and we’ll say so on the spot rather than sell you a repair you shouldn’t buy. Many failures that feel like a dead compressor are actually a $30 start relay, which is why a proper diagnosis comes first.
Low water flow, most often. Edmonton’s moderately hard water scales up inlet valves and overdue filters, so the tray only part-fills and cubes fuse together. A new valve or filter usually restores it; if the ice maker module itself has failed, we replace it as a unit.
Not reliably. Once your garage drops below about 10°C, the thermostat stops calling for cooling and the freezer thaws, long before the −30°C stretches in January.
