Appliance Repair Edmonton: 8 Common Problems & Fixes

Modern Kitchen design and style

Most appliance breakdowns don’t arrive without warning. A fridge runs a little warmer for a week. The dryer needs a second cycle for jeans that used to dry in one. Edmonton adds its own pressure, too. Hard water scales up valves and spray arms, and long winters push dryers and ovens harder than they’d work in a milder city.

Below are the eight problems local homeowners run into most, what usually causes them, what you can safely check yourself, and when it makes sense to book appliance repair in Edmonton instead of losing another weekend to it.

1. Your Fridge Is Running but Not Cooling

The light comes on, the motor hums, and the milk is still lukewarm. Pull the fridge out and look at the condenser coils, either behind the unit or behind the kick plate. A thick layer of dust and pet hair makes the system work twice as hard to shed heat. Vacuum them, wait a few hours, and check again. You want about 4°C in the fridge and -18°C in the freezer.

If the coils are clean and you hear a click every few minutes followed by silence, the start relay is a likely suspect. Many people mistake that clicking for a dead compressor, when the part is small and inexpensive. A failed evaporator fan is another common cause. Both are jobs for a technician.

2. Water Under the Fridge or Ice on the Freezer Floor

A puddle under the crisper drawers usually means a clogged defrost drain. Meltwater from each defrost cycle runs down a small tube to a pan underneath, and when food bits or ice block it, the water backs up and freezes or leaks out the front.

Flushing the drain opening with warm water from a turkey baster sometimes clears it. If the ice returns within days, the defrost heater, thermostat, or timer may have failed.

3. The Washer Won’t Drain

On front-loaders, start with the drain pump filter behind the small panel at the bottom front. Lay towels down and open it slowly. Coins, hair ties, and baby socks turn up there more often than you’d expect. Top-load owners should check the drain hose for kinks where the machine was pushed against the wall. If both are clear and the pump hums without moving water, the pump has likely failed.

4. Violent Shaking During the Spin Cycle

One heavy towel bunched on one side of the drum can make any washer bang around, so redistribute the load first. If it shakes with every load, check that all four feet are level and firmly on the floor. When it still thumps on balanced loads, the suspension rods or shock absorbers are probably worn. Don’t put it off. A drum that moves too much eventually wrecks the bearings, which is one of the costlier washer repairs.

5. The Dryer Runs but Clothes Stay Damp

Here’s the local twist. In an Edmonton winter, the exterior vent flap can freeze shut or pack with snow and lint, and a blocked vent makes a healthy dryer act like a broken one. Step outside while it runs. Weak or no warm air at the vent hood means an airflow problem, not a machine problem. Clean the lint screen after every load and have the full duct cleaned yearly, since lint buildup is a genuine fire risk.

If airflow is strong and the drum stays cold, an electric dryer may have a failed heating element or thermal fuse, and a gas dryer may have a weak igniter. Keep in mind that a blown thermal fuse is often a symptom of a restricted vent, so swapping the fuse alone can lead to the same failure weeks later.

6. Dishes Come Out Dirty or Gritty

Pull out the filter at the bottom of the tub. Many people don’t know it exists, and a clogged one recirculates dirty water over every rack. Rinse it and scrub gently with a soft brush. Then remove the spray arms and check the small holes, because Edmonton’s hard water leaves mineral deposits that block them. A soak in white vinegar and a toothpick usually restores cleaning power.

Standing water after a clean filter points to the drain pump or a stuck check valve. Leaks at the door usually mean a worn gasket or latch.

7. The Oven Heats Unevenly or Runs Off Temperature

Put an oven thermometer on the center rack and preheat to 175°C. A gap of 10 to 15 degrees is normal. Anything more suggests a sensor or calibration issue. On electric models, look for blistering or a visible break in the bake element. On gas ovens, an igniter that glows but takes more than a minute to light the burner is usually too weak to open the gas valve.

If you ever smell gas, turn the oven off, leave the house, and call your gas utility’s emergency line from outside.

8. Stovetop Burners Won’t Light or Heat

A gas burner that clicks without lighting is often just wet or dirty after a boilover. Let it cool, remove the cap and head, clean the ports, and let everything dry fully. For electric coils, turn the cooktop off and reseat the coil firmly in its receptacle. If it works in a different spot, the receptacle or switch is at fault. Unresponsive touch controls on glass or induction tops usually point to the control board.

When to Stop and Call a Pro

Cleaning, leveling, and clearing blockages are fair game for homeowners. Gas lines, sealed refrigeration systems, and live electrical parts are not. If an appliance trips the breaker, smells like burning, or sparks, unplug it and leave it off. Age matters too. A $250 repair on a three-year-old washer is easy to justify, while the same bill on a 15-year-old machine deserves an honest repair-or-replace conversation, and anyone handling your appliance repair in Edmonton should be willing to have it.
